The Odlins Road thread

Post by Sausager »

Hey guys. I thought id start a thread where anyone can post latest info about Oflins Road in the Akatarawa forest near Wellington. Hopefully this will stop people starting new threads every time they want to query track conditions! Pics and stories won't go amiss either!

So if you go up there, feel free to report in here before/after your trip.

Anyone been up there lately? What kind of truck setup is required?

I've heard rumours that someone put some steel spikes on Odlins last week for some reason. I saw on Facebook that someone found a whole lot of them after they slashed some of their tyres on them  Keep an eye out if you're heading up there.

I wonder how the track has fared after all this rain. Anyone planning on heading up soon?

I went in today, first time in almost 6 years, is definitely cutting up, some big washout bits. A work colleague in a stock Isuzu on road tyres came along and tho' we had to pull him up one bit we got to the turn around area before the tank traps. Had to have several goes at some areas, picking the right line as very easy to get cross axled - but definitely still do-able and a fun morning trip.

Might have some video of the first half of the track up in the next day or two.

Cheers for the update. It obviously survived the rain we've been having recently? I'm keen to see the footage you got - post it up when you have it sorted :)

Have a look at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0xZ5Z ... pNIfUi0zag, I have uploaded 3 small clips so far, will upload some more over the next week as time permits. My son has about 40 minutes from his GoPro which was stuck to the bonnet of the jeep, once that is uploaded I will include a link to that as well.

I have heard that Odlins is closed due to a slip about halfway to the hut. The road has washed away and is impassable.

This is only what I have heard. Does anyone have a firm word? Or better yet, has anyone got any pics? Is there any word of a plan to get it open again?

Buggeration...

When you say carpark do you mean the area up at Maymorn junction before the track heads down to the hut?

Does anyone know anything about the track shown here heading west (left) from the summit of the Akatarawa Road (can see Odlin's heading out east/right)? It looks like it's a marked track on Google, and you can also make out a physical track too.
Image

It is currently blocked by a wall of dirt (pic from 2013, but it's relatively unchanged).
Image

A quick look at a GIS viewer shows what looks like a paper road through there - well actually 2 roads that join up. If it is a paper road, then surely there's legal access through there?
Image

Going back in time to 2008 on Google streetview shows that it's an open track
Image

Does anyone know what the story is with this? Why is it blocked off? Is there legal access through there? What is stopping anyone from opening the wall of dirt and going for a drive?

Cheers

It goes into the greater Wellington regional council recreation area I believe and requires permission and entry is gained from a different location. Yes access for 4x4's is allowed but you'd need to ask some one like mattman as to the details
