LJ Project "Rangi"

Post by UBZ »

So I needed something to beat around in the bush , something that I didn't need to care to much about the panel work .
So project "Rangi" was born

So word went out on the Local LJ network and a suitable LJ50 was acquired .
Image

Image
l
The Plan as it stands .
LJ50 Chassis / Tub (whats left of it) / Roll cage
LJ80 Diffs (spring perches moved to LJ50 Spacing)
SJ410 Transfer Case ( with aftermarket reduction gear set)
Suzuki F10a 970cc Engine and LJ80 4 speed gearbox.
Rear Mounted Radiator
Front and Rear disc breaks
Rear Lockright auto locker
9000lb winch (rear mounted)
7.50x16 SAT (32x7.5x16) mud tyres on modified factory 16" rims

I all ready have most of the parts , so hopefully this will progress quickly

the Bottom of the tub has the standard dipped in acid dissolving coke can action going on , has been "Rangi" repaired by pop rivitting some sheet metal in where the floors were and the rear has been chopped off .

Some of the more interesting features

Image
The Origional LJ50 3cyl 2 stroke and gearbox, that is going to DB as spares .

Image
Awesome super advanced ultra air cooled , fiddle break plumbing - these will be removed

Image
The Plumber Snorkel

Image
Rear Tray Removed

Image
Engine Stripped out

Image
LJ80 Axle and engine mount Donner. - Chassis has major rust issues

Yep its the Katikati LJ .

A little bit of progress

Got both the front and rear doner Diffs stripped down .
Image

Rear Diff Housing is toast , so the LJ Network comes to the rescue again with a usable housing .
Image

Front Diff Head is in Mint Condition .
Image

Rear Diff Head is a bit dirty , but with a re-bulid will be fine as R&P are still sweet.
Image

but Im proborby not going to use these diff heads know as im looking at putting 4.88 LJ50 R&P into 410 Carriers for better gearing .

One Front axle is going to need a sleeve where the seal runs
Image

Rear axles look ok , just need new bearings .

I have a spare F10A sitting around left over from my little Suzuki it is one of the SC100 coupe engines so apparently has an extra 2 HP due to factory head work. It needs the headgasket replacing and it has a set of bearings rings and gaskets with it.

UBZ i'll give you first refusal.

Feeling rich are we   At least 50hrs work in that ...........
I told you before , go buy a $300 mig welder and teach yourself to weld . Dosen't need to be pretty if you start learning on the bits that will be hidden.
Once you master welding zuk panel steel , everything else is easy.

Pinnacle LJ factory ish axle setup , all Suzuki

LJ50 Chassis - Narrow spring spacing
LJ80 housings - perches moved to LJ50 spacing
4.88 LJ50 Ring and Pinion
410 side gears and lockright in rear
Soft old SJ410 springs
Factory shackles with rubber bushes
SJ413 Hubs and stubs
Vitara rotors and calipers - front
SJ313 rotors and calipers - rear
Vitara fixed drive flanges
SJ410 Tie Rod
Cut and shut LJ80 / SJ410 draglink .
lj80 front and rear axles (front to be replaced with custom)

Poor transmission mounts have not held up well . 0km on these !
Might need to tweak the brackets a little… to get thing sitting a little better aligned . Gearbox is currently sitting on the cross member . :poke:

Brake work next
Some bling (LWB Vitara vented routers to suit the calipers all ready up front)
Also made a start on the master cylinder . Love the quality of the build on these old parts , feels good bringing them back into service again. Looking like just a good clean a reassembly is all that’s required

Image

Image

Then turned my hand back to glueing LJ tinfoil.
Practice on the rain collector first.

Rebuilt the master cylinder , not to difficult, just needed a good clean and reassembly .
Then got to fabbibg up a mounting frame and straps for the fuel cell from bits of an old boat trailer and left over flashings from the house

Next is to pull the body off and sort the last of the chassis welding , and fit new hard lines for fuel and brakes
